DJing with Headphones – DJ Mixer 4.1

DJ Mixer includes a unique feature that lets you listen to the song that is loaded to the mixer before your audience can hear it.
This feature allows you to cue and to tweak the song playback parameters so mixing it into your mix using the cross-fader will sound perfect!
DJing with headphones requires 2 devices because iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads only have one sound out jack that you use to connect to a sound system for the main audio output of your mix.

Without headphones you are limited to mixing using only the visual information that appears on your device’s screen and audio from the track you are mixing that your audience already hears.

To mix with headphones on DJ Mixer, you’ll need an additional iDevice such as iPhone, iPod Touch and either a WiFi network or Bluetooth connection between the devices.

Use your main iPad to output the main audio of your mix, typically to a sound system and to send headphones monitoring audio to the headphones device.

Use the headphones device to receive audio from cued tracks on the main device  while the main track pumps over a sound system.

DJing with Headphones and a WiFi Network

Headphones Device Configuration – WiFi

  • Join the same WiFi network that your iPad running DJ Mixer is on, using the Settings App
  • Launch DJ Mixer on headphones device
  • Tap ‘Settings’
  • Tap ‘Use As Headphones’

iPad Configuration – WiFi

  • Join the same WiFi network that the headphones device is on
  • Tap the ‘Headphones’ button at the bottom left of the mixer main screen
  • Select the headphones device from the list on bottom of dialog box

The audio sent to the headphones over the WiFi network is determined by the cross-fader position on the main device. For example, when the track in Deck A is played (cross-fader all the way to the left), the audio of the track in Deck B will be sent to the headphones for cueing.

DJing with Headphones without a WiFi Network

If you don’t have access to a reliable WiFi network, you can DJ with headphones using Bluetooth networking

Headphones Device Configuration – Bluetooth

  • Turn OFF WiFi on your device in your device Settings
  • Turn ON Bluetooth on your device in your device Settings
  • Launch DJ Mixer on headphones device
  • Tap ‘Settings’
  • Tap ‘Use As Headphones’

iPad Configuration – Bluetooth

  • Turn OFF WiFi on your device in your device Settings
  • Turn ON Bluetooth on your device in your device Settings
  • Tap the Headphones button at the bottom left of the mixer main screen
  • Select the headphones device from the list on bottom of dialog box

Tips and Tricks

  • Connect your headphones to your iPod or iPhone 4 audio jack before connecting with DJ Mixer.
  • Remember to turn WiFi OFF when connecting using Bluetooth.
  • Please allow up to 15 seconds for your mobile devices to connect with each other.
  • When connecting with WiFi, you want to connect to a WiFi network that is not very busy with many other devices on it. Use a password protected WiFi network when possible.
  • You may also use your own Wireless access point to DJ with headphones. You don’t need to connect the access point to the Internet as it only needs to transfer audio between your 2 mobile devices on a local network.
